TOXICOLOGICAL AND ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITIES OF THE PLANTS TRADITIONALLY USED IN WEST AFRICA FOR INFECTIOUS DIARRHEA

2020

Period :

2020- 2023

1. Context

Infectious diarrhea remains a major public health problem in West Africa,
particularly among children, due to limited access to safe drinking water,
hygiene, and effective antibiotics. The growing emergence of antimicrobial resistance
further complicates treatment, highlighting the need for alternative therapies.
Many West African medicinal plants are traditionally used to treat diarrheal diseases, but their safety and efficacy remain poorly documented.

2. Objectives

General Objective

This project aims to promote the use of medicinal plants from West Africa in the fight against infectious diarrhea.

Specific Objectives

  • - Identify and document medicinal plants traditionally used in West Africa for the treatment of infectious diarrhea. - Evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of selected plant extracts against the main pathogens responsible for diarrhea. - Determine the acute and subacute toxicity of the most active extracts in order to evaluate their safety profile.

3. Résultats Essentiels

  • - Production of monographs on 10 plants selected from scientific literature - Obtaining aqueous and ethanolic extracts, safety and efficacy testing - Development of two herbal medicines for infectious diarrhea.

4. Livrables

  • - Formulation of a traditionally improved medicine against infectious diarrhea called “Elsir.” - Publication of four scientific articles in indexed journals with impact factor.
