2023

Period :

2023 - 2026

The MINNAGAN project entitled "Enhancing skills and competencies of local actors for
sustainable development of plant-based remedies and phytomedicines in Benin" aims to
strengthen higher education in Benin in order to improve research and
research-based teaching, enabling traditional medicine resources
to make an effective and sustainable contribution to the healthcare of the
population, by inducing a paradigm shift towards the evidence-based use
of standardized methods and properly formulated phytomedicines.

1. Context

The MINNAGAN project entitled "Enhancing skills and competencies of local actors for
sustainable development of plant-based remedies and phytomedicines in Benin" aims to
strengthen higher education in Benin in order to improve research and research-based teaching, enabling traditional medicine resources
to make an effective and sustainable contribution to the healthcare of the
population, inducing a paradigm shift towards the evidence-based use of
standardized methods and properly formulated phytomedicines. In
Benin, more than 70% of the population uses traditional medicine for primary health care
. However, the country is struggling to develop standardized herbal medicines
based on scientific evidence that complement modern medicines.
This delay can be explained by a lack of expertise in herbal medicine,
the absence of advanced research platforms, and weak collaboration between African countries
and with foreign specialists.
